S-II Second Stage Insulation differences
The S-II had two different insulation on the exterior. Before Apollo 13, it was honeycomb panels mounted to the exterior and purged with helium to prevent air from freezing beneath the panels. From Apollo 13 on, it was spray on insulation similar to the type used on the Shuttle External Tank. The first version was thicker and had a different appearance to the second spray on type.
